Weekly WRMHL 3/20 and Daido Moriyama

This week's been a big work week for me, lots of projects at school that took most of my bandwidth. On top of that I've been working on my board and BBEG for the Brothers of Promethium 2 Event at Adepticon, but likely I will post all my process shots over on the HS patreon when that secret project is all wrapped up.

So since it's a short week, I figured I'd highlight anther longtime influence of mine, Daido Moriyama, a Japanese Street photographer I remember learning about on tumblr (ah those were the days.)

He's got a raw, quick, black and white high contrast thing that GRIPPED ME

It's hard to even start putting images in here because he has thousands to choose from, but I've got some highlights. He's a street photography god in my mind, and his working process is beautiful. The work itself is layered, textural and the iso (either film or digital) is CRANKED up.

I think what gets me the most is his work is very intuitive, he works with his gut first - and responds instinctively. With creative pursuits we sometimes think that toiling and focusing and struggling will make our work great, I think that working quickly captures ENERGY and excitement that overworking washes out.

Here's a great quote:

Think about what that means, not just for photography but for all artforms - our end goal isn't to make artwork that people say "oh look how good you are" it's about conjuring up something that you can't explain with words.

Here's a cool video of him working/talking about his stuff (if it autodubs, use the video settings to turn back to Japanese, this AI dub aint it):

As far as what I can share, I completed a small zine that I'll handout for free at adepticon if anyone is interested. It's mostly a collection of thoughts made form - but hopefully it gives some people ideas.

Anyway PCE!

Weekly WRMHL 3/14 and Dave McKean

This last week creatively has mostly been spent buttoning up photos, which I'll put down below, but I wanted to highlight one of the artists who has inspired me for the last year or so, Dave McKean.

He's probably most well known for his Sandman covers, but he's a mixed media icon of mine

He's an illustrator not afraid of any media. Collage, photography, drawing, painting and - my favorite, using found objects, flattening them down into their final 2d cover presentation. Here's a little snapshot of the working process:

Here are some works of his, to give you a better idea:

And another little video worth checking out on his working process:

So yea, don't be afraid to make a mess haha
Here's a few of my works from this week, did some portraits of some locals to use:

And one xerox manipulated collage:

Happy Friday!

Weekly WRMHL 3/6

Been a busy week! Aren't they all though - Adepticon prep, gallery prep, photography work for my class and a smattering of home and car projects happening. Chipping through them all though one chunk at a time!

This week I've started wrapping up some work for the show in April, which my wife and I decided to title: Still Points in a Turning World.

I've finished glazing two ceramic tile pieces, but they won't be done completely til they get mounted in some boxes:

I'm pretty happy with them, it's tougher to get a lot of variation using low fire glazes, but I had all this cone 06 stuff at my school so I figured I would try some wet blending and layering with different colors.

I also finished one collage, probably 10" x 12" or so, which does look nice in its final frame, but I only have a photo of the work itself:

w0rmh0l3 EX is finished, I printed and assembled 50 copies to bring with me to adepticon. I was planning to finish this next week but I had some time during lunch yesterday:

The cover's green, it just looks washed out in the image haha

Lastly on Saturday a bunch of us got together and had a noise jam. It was fun and I recorded around 2 hours of weird experimental goodness. It'll be tough to wade through that and pull out tracks, but expect an announcement in the next month or so about a little project demo:

That's that, a fun week as always - plenty to keep me going. I'll leave you with a final image sent to my by @bitsbiborks Brad, which I really love:

Anyway! Til next time

Phew - it's been almost a month since I last posted. This past month (and no doubt all of May) have been swamped. Been busy with finishi...
