Weekly WRMHL 3/14 and Dave McKean

This last week creatively has mostly been spent buttoning up photos, which I'll put down below, but I wanted to highlight one of the artists who has inspired me for the last year or so, Dave McKean.

He's probably most well known for his Sandman covers, but he's a mixed media icon of mine

He's an illustrator not afraid of any media. Collage, photography, drawing, painting and - my favorite, using found objects, flattening them down into their final 2d cover presentation. Here's a little snapshot of the working process:

Here are some works of his, to give you a better idea:

And another little video worth checking out on his working process:

So yea, don't be afraid to make a mess haha
Here's a few of my works from this week, did some portraits of some locals to use:

And one xerox manipulated collage:

Happy Friday!

  1. Man, seeing your stuff side by side really drives home what an inspiration McKean has been for you. Very cool to see what's been inspiring you.

    1. Thanks man! Did it mostly because there wasn't a lot for me to post about, but I'll probably do it more in the future

  2. I'm sure it's no surprise, but Dave has been such a huge inspiration for me too. I was always into sculpting and did some minor collage in server but it is wasn't till I saw his sandman covers back in school that my mind opened up to how valid, and potent "mixed media" as an "illustration" format was. If you haven't seen his work in Mr.Punch I recommend checking it out! Really cool mixture of almost stop motion photography, pastels, that ooze texture.

Loving your layered shots, the high contrast framing in the first one is particularly beautiful. Almost makes me feel like it'd be the perfect shot for an an alternate world where Argento made Vertigo.

  3. Really beautiful breakdown and pieces. Fond memories of being gobsmacked by McKean's work in The Dark Tower: Wizard and Glass back in middle school.

  4. I spent so long when I was younger just poring over those Sandman covers. They were so different from anything else you'd find in the space, and it's great to see him getting his flowers in this community
